Why 7-a-side field hockey is changing the game
7-a-side hockey is rapidly gaining popularity around the world. More and more clubs, veteran teams, and recreational players are discovering the benefits of this fast-paced format. With fewer players on the field, the game becomes quicker, every player enjoys more touches on the ball, and there are more attacking opportunities throughout the match.
One of the biggest advantages of 7-a-side hockey is that teams need fewer players to compete. This makes it much easier to put together a squad for both tournaments and competitions. At the same time, the competitive challenge, team spirit, and intensity of the game remain fully intact. It is this combination that is driving the growing popularity of 7-a-side hockey worldwide.
At Mister Valencia, we have noticed this trend as well. During our international veteran hockey tournaments, we see increasing interest from teams looking for new competition formats that perfectly combine hockey with a memorable weekend abroad.
A new addition to our hockey tournament portfolio
For many years, we have been organizing international hockey tournaments for veteran teams in Spain and Portugal. Events such as the Paella Cup in Valencia, the Espeto Cup in Benalmádena, and the Sardinha Cup in Porto welcome teams from across Europe every year.
What these tournaments have in common is that they are about much more than hockey. Teams come together for a complete weekend filled with sport, social activities, and new friendships.
The growing interest in 7-a-side hockey inspired us to expand our tournament portfolio with a brand-new event: the Valencia Hockey 7’s Cup.
Introducing the Valencia Hockey 7’s Cup
From 2–4 October 2026, the inaugural Valencia Hockey 7’s Cup will take place in Valencia, Spain. This international 7-a-side hockey tournament is open to men’s, women’s, and mixed veteran teams aged 35 and over.
Over the course of three days, teams will play multiple matches against international opponents while also enjoying everything Valencia has to offer.
Participants will stay in a comfortable four-star hotel and can take part in a range of optional activities, including a guided bike tour through the city. Shared lunches, group dinners, and, of course, traditional Valencian paella are all part of the experience.
As with all our events, the Valencia Hockey 7’s Cup is about more than just the matches. It is about creating unforgettable memories, strengthening team bonds, and enjoying an exceptional hockey weekend together.
